Related image  workhouses were poor people who had no gob or homes to live . They earned their keep by doing their gobs in the workhouse. Also, in the workhouse were orphaned children (without parents) and abandon children, the physically sick, the disabled, the elderly and unmarried mothers. The women mostly did domestic jobs such as cleaning, or helping in the kitchen or laundry. Some workhouses had workshops for sewing, spinning and weaving or other local trades. Others had their own vegetable gardens where the inmates worked to provide food for the workhouse.
