Workhouses were where poor people who had no job or home lived.
They earned their keep by doing jobs in the workhouse.
In Street Child, we learnt that they have to eat silently or they will get whipped by a rope with a knot in. If they try to escape, the "bobby's" will chase them and whip them. (Bobby's are another word for police)
Women, children and men had different living and working areas in the workhouse, so families were split up.
The food was tasteless and was the same day after day.
Here are a few rules from the workhouse:
- Don't make noise when silence should be kept
- Don't swear
- Don't threaten to assault or hurt another person
- Don't pretend to be sick
- Don't play cards or other games
If you don't follow these rules then you will get whipped or punished.
