workhouses
what is a workhouse?
a workhouse is a huge building which has been built for super poor people who couldn't find work back in the Victorian times.
If a poor person did not want to live in a workhouse they would become a squatter and go to prison!
Why did people not what to live in a workhouse?
people world choose a workhouse as there last hope as it was the last thing they wanted to do. this is because if a man or member of a family went into a workhouse the whole family went with them as there was no choice.
Children in workhouses
Children had lessons in workhouses such as: reading; writing; maths and religion. Often teachers were very cruel, this meant child abuse.
Food
There often had bread, cheese and if they were lucky meat. It was common to miss a meal if you were bad or did something wrong.
